Ian Campbell heads the West Coast offices of The Abernathy MacGregor Group.  He focuses on crisis communications, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations, financial PR, and issues management across a broad range of industries.

He has directed or advised communications teams in nearly 50 M&A assignments:

  • Broadcom in its unsolicited offer for Emulex;
  • Yahoo!  in its unsolicited offer from Microsoft; Overture Inc. in its sale to Yahoo!; Yahoo! in its unsolicited acquisition of HotJobs;
  • Chicago Mercantile Exchange in its proposed merger with the Chicago Board of Trade;
  • Avery Dennison in its acquisition of Paxar;
  • ICOS in its sale to Eli Lilly & Co.;
  • Washington Mutual in its acquisitions of the Dime Savings Bank, Bank United, HF Ahmanson, Fleet Mortgage, PMC Mortgage and Providian;
  • Marvell Technology Group in its acquisition of Galileo Technology;
  • United Financial of Japan (UFJ – formerly Sanwa Bank California) in its sale of United California Bank to BNP-Paribas and its Bank of the West;
  • Nicholas Applegate in its sale to Allianz;
  • Sempra Energy in its acquisition of KN Energy and in its Dutch auction tender;
  • Litton Industries in its dual bear hug acquisitions and proposed acquisition of Avondale Industries and Newport News respectively;
  • Great Western Financial in defense of unsolicited offer from HF Ahmanson;
  • Central Pacific Financial in its successful unsolicited acquisition of CB Bancshares Inc.

In addition, Mr. Campbell has advised on numerous control contests, including Safeway’s 2004 withhold campaign by six state pension funds.  His crisis and regulatory assignments include SEC investigations, multi-state attorneys general investigations, anti-trust matters, cases under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and issues involving the FTC, FERC, CPUC, and every national banking regulator.

Mr. Campbell began his career as a journalist and served 12 years as senior vice president of Great Western Financial Corporation.  He served Gov. George Deukmejian as deputy director of the California Department of Commerce.  Gov. Pete Wilson appointed him to two terms on the California Parks and Recreation Commission, which he chaired.  He is a former director of the California Taxpayers Association and chaired the Coro Foundation national board of governors.  He holds a Masters degree from Occidental College and graduated Magna Cum Laude in government from Pomona College.
